This 1977 Powermatic-Burke Millrite was the first machine that we purchased. It previously lived with the drill presses in an aluminum ship mast manufacturing facility outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Almost immediately we wanted to add a digital readout. A Digital Readout (DRO) system provides real-time, on-screen position feedback for milling machines and other manual tools. It tracks movement along the X, Y, and Z axes with high precision, helping reduce errors, improve accuracy, and work more efficiently. The curved castings of the Millrite presented some interesting challenges fabricating brackets that would allow precise fit-up for the scales. Along the way, we discovered a way to modify the end cap on a the ubiquitous imported glass scale to simplify shortening a scale to fit an axis.
